The Best Universities in India
Dec 25th, 2008 by GCR Editor
What can the method used here at the Google College Rankings tell us about universities in India?
India is a good country to examine via Google because it has a large and diverse university sector. Here is a first attempt at ranking, one that can serve as a basis for future comment and comparison:
- University of Mumbai
- Anna University
- University of Delhi
- Annamalai University
- University of Madras
- University of Pune
- Indira Gandhi National Open University
- Calcutta University
- Madurai Kamaraj University
- Jawaharlal Nehru University
These are the rankings given by an English-language search on google.co.in, but Google also permits searching in Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Punjabi. How do Indian universities rank under those language-specific searches?
Perhaps readers who are fluent in one or more of those languages might like to report on how Google ranks university websites for the languages they know. It would be natural to assume that the rankings might differ from the English-language rankings, since some universities may well have a stronger reputation within particular language communities.
Good to see such a heplful ranking but where we can have the overall ranking (Including IIT’s & NIT’s)?
Thanks for giving such useful information.
Thank you for the kind words, Rafiul.
Your question points out one of the weaknesses of the Google-approach to college ranking: it depends upon the regular use of specific words like “college” or “university” in an institution’s name. A university that has “Institute” as its formal name — such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an excellent school by almost any measure — will generally not appear in a “university” Google-ranking.
But this may be an opportunity as well. I will have to try searching on the word “Institute” and see what rankings Google will return.
Recently, the survey of the college Outlook published an overview of the top education institutes in India. Also a large number of Indian university lecturers and professionals are asked to give their opinions about several institutions. Indian Top 20 rankings are published for several niches.
